07.02.2026, Haflong, Dima Hasao || In a significant initiative to promote sustainability and environmental responsibility in Dima Hasao district, HELP Society (Helping Everyone Live and Prosper Society), the District Nodal Agency for the Environment Education Programme (EEP) in Dima Hasao, successfully organised a District-Level Workshop on “Upcycling of Used Papers into Eco-Friendly Pens” at the Haflong Government College Auditorium Hall. The programme marked another milestone in strengthening environmental education and encouraging innovative waste management practices among educators.

The workshop was conducted under the Environment Education Programme (EEP) implemented by Assam Science Technology and Environment Council (ASTEC), Science & Technology Department, Government of Assam, and supported by Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India. The initiative reflects the broader commitment of the Government of Assam and the Government of India to promote sustainable development and environmental awareness at the grassroots level.

The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from 80 educators representing 40 schools across Dima Hasao district, making it a truly inclusive and impactful programme. The primary objective of the workshop was to promote waste reduction, encourage creative reuse of discarded materials, and provide hands-on environmental learning experiences for teachers. By demonstrating how used papers can be transformed into eco-friendly pens, the programme effectively showcased a practical and sustainable alternative to plastic-based writing instruments.

The participants had the opportunity to learn from distinguished resource persons who conducted engaging and practical sessions. Miss Maishringdi Dibragede, Assistant Teacher of Government Boys’ Higher Secondary School, Haflong, and Miss Arbina Hojai, Assistant Teacher of G.C. Langthasa High School, guided the participants through the step-by-step process of converting waste paper into functional and durable eco-friendly pens. Their sessions were interactive and informative, enabling educators to understand how such activities can be incorporated into school-based environmental programmes and student projects.

In addition to the practical training, Shri Govind Singh, Assistant Teacher of Vivekananda Vidyalaya High School, delivered a concise and insightful session on Solid Waste Management. His presentation emphasised the importance of waste segregation, reduction of landfill waste, and the role of schools in promoting responsible waste management practices. The session strengthened the environmental perspective of the workshop and highlighted the critical role educators play in shaping environmentally conscious future generations.

The workshop successfully combined creativity, sustainability, and environmental education, transforming waste into value and ideas into meaningful action. It reinforced the spirit of environmental responsibility and sustainable practices across the district while equipping teachers with practical skills that can be replicated in their respective schools.

HELP Society extends its heartfelt gratitude to all participating teachers, resource persons, and dedicated volunteers whose active involvement ensured the smooth and successful conduct of the programme. Through such impactful initiatives, HELP Society continues to strengthen environmental awareness in Dima Hasao and promote sustainable practices that contribute to a greener and more responsible future.
