Haflong, Dima Hasao – HELP Society, as the District Nodal Agency under the Environment Education Programme, successfully organized a 2-Day District-Level Resource Persons’ Workshop on Solid Waste Management, Vermicomposting, and Rainwater Harvesting at the Cultural Institute Hall, Haflong, on the 10th and 11th February 2025. This initiative was implemented by the Assam Science Technology and Environment Council (ASTEC), Govt. of Assam, and supported by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), Govt. of India.
The workshop was designed to equip educators and institutional representatives with the necessary knowledge and practical skills to implement eco-friendly waste management practices, emphasizing the importance of sustainability in educational institutions and communities.

Day 1: In-Depth Sessions & Practical Demonstrations
The first day of the workshop featured expert sessions led by Master Resource Persons’ Miss. Joya Chetri and Shri Uday Nirola provided in-depth insights into key environmental conservation techniques. Their sessions covered:
✅ Sustainable Solid Waste Management – Exploring best practices for waste segregation, recycling, and reducing landfill dependency.
✅ Vermicomposting & Organic Waste Recycling – Understanding the role of earthworms in composting and how it benefits organic farming.
✅ Efficient Rainwater Harvesting Techniques – Learning various methods to conserve water, recharge groundwater, and reduce water wastage.

The highlight of the day was the enthusiastic participation of school representatives from across Dima Hasao, who engaged in lively discussions and practical demonstrations. These interactive sessions not only deepened their understanding but also encouraged them to implement sustainable initiatives in their respective institutions.
HELP Society emphasized the urgent need for responsible waste disposal, eco-friendly solutions, and community participation in ensuring long-term environmental sustainability.

Day 2: Field Visit, Hands-On Training & Certification Ceremony
The second day of the workshop focused on practical learning and real-world applications. Participants embarked on a field visit to Laxmi Enterprises at Upper Bagetar, where they witnessed the vermicomposting process firsthand. This visit provided valuable insights into:
🌿 The transformation of organic waste into nutrient-rich compost
🌿 The significance of vermicomposting in sustainable agriculture and organic farming
🌿 The economic and environmental benefits of composting as a sustainable waste solution

By experiencing these processes in a real-world setting, participants gained practical knowledge and confidence to implement similar initiatives in their schools and communities.
The workshop concluded with a certificate distribution ceremony, recognizing the newly trained resource persons for their commitment to spreading environmental awareness and promoting sustainable waste management practices. Their role will be instrumental in educating students and community members on eco-friendly practices that contribute to a cleaner and greener future.
